GM facing bigger uphill battle in Europe than Ford

Though both of Detroit's biggest automakers have a long road of recovery ahead of them in Europe, a new report indicates that Ford's position is a bit stronger than General Motors'.

The comparison brings back memories of 2008 and 2009, when Ford narrowly avoided bankruptcy, unlike GM and Chrysler. This time, however, Ford isn't leveraging its iconic blue oval. Instead, the automaker's restructuring plan announced recently is much more aggressive than GM's, a move that analysts say could help it emerge from the European crisis faster.

Ford is planning to close three plants and lay off thousands of workers, but GM's money-losing Opel unit continues to resist making major cuts. Opel has agreed to work with France's PSA - the makers of Peugeot and Citroen - but the cost-cutting moves anticipated by that deal's future platform-sharing won't be realized for several years. In addition, Opel's relationship with its unions in Europe has long proved tenuous, a potentially major hurdle the automaker will have to overcome if it wants to shed jobs and production facilities.

"We hope GM will take similar steps [to Ford]," Fifth Third Bank portfolio manager Mirko Mikelic told Reuters.

Still, both Ford and GM face numerous obstacles to recovery in Europe, where a stagnant economy and increased debt loads are having a measurable impact on new car sales.?

Study identifies how personality influences rainbow trout's memory window

A fish's personality can influence how it responds to, and learns from threats, according to a new study by Professor Grant Brown from Concordia University in Canada and his colleagues. Their work, looking at how personality influences a fish's memory of a predator threat, shows that bold trout forget predator odor, and hence potentially predator threat, quicker than shy trout. The research is published online in Springer's journal Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology.

A prey's ability to balance the conflicting demands of avoiding predators and foraging, defending territories and/or mating depends on the availability of reliable information regarding predator threats. As predators can be present in different locations and at different times, learning and retaining information about a predator threat, and being able to recall it at a later stage, is key to better assess relevant threats in the future.

Brown and team studied how long juvenile rainbow trout retained information they had previously learned about a predator, and whether the duration of retention was influenced by the fish's personality i.e. whether they were 'shy' or 'bold'.

The trout were classified as either shy or bold depending on how quickly they escaped from test tanks once a movable Plexiglas barrier was removed. Those who moved quickly displayed risk-taking behavior - the bold fish; those who moved more cautiously were avoiding risk - the shy fish.

The researchers conditioned the individual trout to recognize the odor of pumpkinseed, a freshwater fish and trout predator. They then tested whether they still recognised the odor, both 24 hours and eight days later.

They found that the fish's personality shaped how long the information was retained. Although there was no difference in the fish's odor recognition during the conditioning phase or after 24 hours, shy trout continued to demonstrate a learned response to pumpkinseed odor eight days later, while bold trout did not. These results suggest that the behavioral tactic employed at the time of conditioning i.e. risk-taking or risk-avoiding, influences the memory window of acquired information.

Nate Berkus Talks Being Gay, Coming Out And Loss Of Longtime ...

  • Jim Parsons, 2012

<em>New York Times </em>scribe Patrick Healy confirmed "The Big Bang Theory" star's sexuality<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/27/theater/jim-parsons-prepares-for-his-lead-role-in-harvey.html?_r=1" target="_hplink"> as part of a profile</a>. The revelation came late in the article, when Healy describes the 39-year-old actor's role in the 2011 revival of Larry Kramer's HIV/AIDS crisis drama, "The Normal Heart." Wrote Healy: '"The Normal Heart" resonated with him on a few levels: Mr. Parsons is gay and in a 10-year relationship, and working with an ensemble again onstage was like nourishment, he said." Though the <em>Times </em>didn't identify Parsons' partner, he has been romantically liked with art director Todd Spiewak (pictured).

  • Anne Burrell, 2012

"Secrets of a Restaurant Chef" host Anne Burrell confirmed she's a lesbian and in a committed relationship with a woman, just days after "Chopped" host Ted Allen made a reference to her sexuality in a radio interview. "Anne doesn't feel she was outed," Burrell's rep told Page Six. "She has made no secret of her relationship." The rep went on to note, "Her significant other is a very private woman. They have been together for a couple of years and spend a lot of time together."

  • Matt Bomer, 2012

The 34-year-old "White Collar" hunk <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/13/matt-bomer-comes-out-gay-thanks-partner_n_1272997.html" target="_hplink">thanked his partner</a> Simon Halls and his three children during Saturday's Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards, where he received the New Generation Arts and Activism Award for his work in the fight against HIV/AIDS. "I'd really especially like to thank my beautiful family: Simon, Kit, Walker, Henry," he told the crowd. "Thank you for teaching me what unconditional love is. You will always be my proudest accomplishment."

  • Gillian Anderson, 2012

The "X-Files" actress <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/13/gillian-anderson-lesbian-relationships-out-magazine_n_1342801.html" target="_hplink">revealed she's had numerous relationships</a> with women in a 2012 interview with <em>Out</em> magazine. The 43-year-old mother of three, who's long enjoyed a sizable lesbian fanbase, told <em>Out</em> that she first had a relationship with a woman while still in high school, after moving from her native England to suburban Michigan. "If I had thought I was 100 percent gay, would it have been a different experience for me?" Anderson, who was voted "Most Bizarre" and "Most Likely to Be Arrested" in high school, ponders. "Would it have been a bigger deal if shame had been attached to it and all those things that become huge life-altering issues for youngsters in that situation? It's possible that my attitude around it came, on some level, from knowing that I still liked boys."

  • Jonathan Knight, 2011

The New Kids On The Block singer was out-ed by fellow '80s teen pop star Tiffany in January 2011 when she revealed she dated Knight before "he became gay later." I have lived my life very openly and have never hidden the fact that I am gay!"</blockquote>

Our society needs to recognize the unstoppable momentum toward unequivocal civil equality for every gay lesbian bisexual and transgendered citizen of this country."</blockquote>

Everybody who knows me personally, they know I'm gay. And that's the way people should be able to live our lives, really. Now it seems there is speculation and interest in my private life and relationships. So, rather than ignore those who choose to publish their opinions without actually talking to me, I am happy to dispel any rumors or misconceptions and am quite proud to say that I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest and feel most fortunate to be working with wonderful people in the business I love." </blockquote>

The Wi-Fi Chromebook goes on sale Monday at a range of retailers, including BestBuy and Staples.?The 3G Chromebook, meanwhile, will likely launch a week later; you can pre-order the device at Newegg.com, Amazon, and the Samsung Website.?

The Chromebook gets an 11.6-inch screen ? roughly on par with the smaller MacBook Air ??a 16GB solid-state hard drive, a pair of USB ports, and a listed weight of 2.43 pounds. (The 11-inch Macbook Air, by comparison, weighs?2.38 pounds.)?Users will get a bunch of free Google Drive storage and automatic updates for the Chrome OS.?So how does the latest Chromebook stack up to its competitors??

Well, over at Computerworld, JR Raphael praises the "cloud-centric" operating system on the Wi-Fi Chromebook.?

"Chrome OS eliminates the hassles of manually updating applications over time; the platform's Web-based apps all update seamlessly on their own, just like the OS," Raphael writes. "You don't have to deal with messy drivers and software conflicts or?worry about virus protection, either. And thanks to the nature of the software setup, Chromebooks don't get gunked up and slowed down over time, as more traditional PCs frequently do."

And at Engadget, Myriam Joire calls the Chromebook "a phenomenal device for the price. If you're used to working in the cloud, you're basically getting 80 percent of the entry-level MacBook Air experience for a quarter of the price. Factor in the?Google Now?integration and 100GB of free?Google Drive?storage for two years and this latest Chromebook is a winner."?

Yahoo&#39;s Media Products Head Departs to Run Games Unit for CBS ...

Another big media departure from Yahoo: David Rice, VP of media properties, has left the Silicon Valley Internet giant to take over as SVP and GM of CBS Interactive Games, according to sources close to the situation.

Rice left Yahoo Monday and starts at CBS on Monday, sources said.

Earlier this week, the head of Yahoo?s Omg! and Yahoo TV, Liz Coughlin, left to run business operations at next-gen digital content site Young Hollywood.

The media properties at Yahoo have always been its most successful and powerful units, including powerhouse sites such as Yahoo Finance and Yahoo Sports.

Which is why Rice is a great get for CBS. Hired in 2010 as part of the crew brought in by former Chief Product Officer Blake Irving, the former Microsoft exec was the key media product manager in charge of strategy and execution of Yahoo?s home page, news, sports, finance, entertainment, lifestyle, games and more.

CBS Interactive Games is a big digital division at the company, with more than $50 million in annual revenue, 32 million unique monthly visitors and one billion page views a month, according to comScore. GameSpot is its flagship site, along with GameFAQs, Metacritic, ComicVine and a variety of video streaming and eSports offerings.

Rice will be in charge of all operations at CBS Interactive Games ? at Yahoo, he had only media product duties, although the many properties are all huge.

In a related move this past week, new CEO Marissa Mayer hired former Google sales exec Henrique De Castro to become COO at Yahoo. Mayer also told staff that all media units would report to him.

Foster kids do equally well when adopted by gay, lesbian or heterosexual parents

    Friday, October 19, 2012

High-risk children adopted from foster care do equally well when placed with gay, lesbian or heterosexual parents, UCLA psychologists report in the first multi-year study of children adopted by these three groups of parents.

The psychologists looked at 82 high-risk children adopted from foster care in Los Angeles County. Of those children, 60 were placed with heterosexual parents and 22 were placed with gay or lesbian parents (15 with gay male parents and seven with lesbian parents).

The age of the children ranged from 4 months to 8 years, with an average age of 4, while the adoptive parents ranged in age from 30 to 56, with an average age of 41. Sixty-eight percent of the parents were married or living with a partner.

The psychologists studied the children two months, one year and two years after they were placed with a family. The children underwent a cognitive assessment by a clinical psychologist three times during the course of the study, and the parents completed standard questionnaires about the children's behavior at each of the three assessment periods.

The psychologists found very few differences among the children at any of the assessments over the two-year period following placement. On average, children in heterosexual, gay and lesbian households achieved significant gains in their cognitive development, and their levels of behavior problems remained stable. Their IQ scores increased by an average of 10 points, from about 85 to 95 ? a large increase, from low-average to average functioning.

"The children showed meaningful gains in heterosexual, gay and lesbian families," said Justin Lavner, a UCLA doctoral candidate in psychology and lead author of the study. "Their cognitive development improved substantially, while their behavior problems and social development were stable."

The study is published in the October issue of the American Journal of Orthopsychiatry.

The children had multiple risk factors at the time of adoption, including premature birth, prenatal substance exposure, abuse or neglect, and multiple prior placements. The psychologists acquired information regarding these biological and environmental risk factors from birth records, court reports and Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services records.

The children adopted by gay and lesbian families had more risk factors at the time of their placement; out of nine risk factors, they averaged one additional risk factor, compared with the children adopted by heterosexual parents.

"The children adopted by gay and lesbian parents had more challenges before they were adopted and yet they end up in the same place, which is impressive," said Letitia Anne Peplau, a distinguished research professor of psychology at UCLA and co-author of the study.

At a time when tens of thousands of foster children lack stable homes and concerns about the suitability of gay and lesbian adoptive parents limit the pool of potential parents, the study indicates that gay and lesbian parents can provide nurturing homes for these children in a manner similar to that of heterosexual parents.

"There is no scientific basis to discriminate against gay and lesbian parents," Peplau said.

Asked whether children need a mother and father, senior author Jill Waterman, a UCLA adjunct professor of psychology, said, "Children need people who love them, regardless of the gender of their parents."

The study participants were recruited from UCLA TIES (Training, Intervention, Education, and Services) for Families as part of a broader study on the development of children adopted from foster care. UCLA TIES for Families promotes the successful adoption of high-risk children from foster care to nurturing homes.

Waterman expressed gratitude to Susan Edelstein, executive director of UCLA TIES for Families, and the Adoptions Division of the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services for their support of this project.

More than 100,000 children in foster care in the United States are awaiting adoption, said Lavner, who has a graduate research fellowship from the National Science Foundation. Adoption policies toward gay men and lesbians vary among the states. Every state allows single gay and lesbian parents to adopt, but not all states allow same-sex couples to adopt; California does.

Cell Phone Users to Pay per Second in March | Ubpost News

    By M.ZOLJARGAL

Mongolian cell phone users currently pay for a whole minute even if their call lasts only few seconds. However from March 1, 2013, customers will pay by the second rather than by the minute. The Agency for Fair Competition and Consumer Rights (AFCCR) held a meeting on September 25 in which officials from AFCCR raised a proposal for mobile phone operators to calculate the rate of phone calls per second, not by minute, and to stop requiring collateral money from new pre-paid mobile phone users.
The AFCCR issued a press release on October 16 to inform media about the decision of AFCCR and the administrations of the Communications Regulatory Commission of Mongolia, the Information, Communications Technology and Post Authority (ICTPA), Mobicom Corporation, Unitel Group, Skytel and G-Mobile regarding the proposals. Director Ts.Jadambaa of the ICTPA stated ?Four mobile phone operators (Mobicom, Unitel, Skytel, G-Mobile) will shift to the new payment system at the same time on March 1, 2013. Before starting the system, we need to determine the payment per second. Users will have two options. They can either remain with the old tariff payment or shift to the new system.?
The project to relieve users from collateral payment, whether partially or entirely, will be implemented starting from November 1.

Wow, wow, wow ? and thanks | Greta Christina&#39;s Blog

    Wow, wow, wow.

The fundraiser has been a thumping success. It has exceeded all my expectations. I will be able to comfortably cover my mortgage and other expenses for a few months, while I recover my health and get my writing and speaking career revved up again afterwards. No further donations or spreading of the word are necessary: I?ve actually gotten somewhat more than I really need, and I?m seriously contemplating donating the overflow ? probably to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Light the Night Walk via the Foundation Beyond Belief, and/or to Camp Quest. (I feel okay about asking my readers for financial help, but I feel weird taking more than I really need.)

I hadn?t realized how much of my stress and anxiety about this situation was focused on my financial worries, until I didn?t have those worries anymore. It is a huge, huge weight off my shoulders: I can now go ahead with the surgery, and with my recovery afterwards, with all my focus on my health. And I won?t feel pressed by financial worries into rushing back to work sooner than I?m ready to.

And possibly more importantly: I am deeply loving the atheist community right now. Atheism really came through for me on this one. I am feeling deeply loved and valued by this community right now. And I?m feeling excited and happy and energized to get back into working with it when I recover? in a way that I haven?t in a while.

Huge thanks to everyone who donated, with any amount. Some people have been commenting or emailing to say things like, ?I?m so sorry I couldn?t donate more?: y?all need to knock it off. As someone who?s often on the broke side herself, I am intensely touched by people who are short on cash but who felt moved to make a small donation to help out anyway. And the small donations have been adding up, and are a big part of what?s made this a success. Huge thanks also to everyone who blogged about this fundraiser, Tweeted it, Facebooked it, Reddited it, or otherwise spread the word about it. Huge thanks for folks who have been buying my book, or encouraging other people to buy it. Huge thanks for all the suggestions for books and movies and TV shows: thanks to you, I am going to be the best-entertained cancer recovery patient in history. And huge thanks to everyone who simply sent me kind words. The kind words have been an enormous part of what?s making me feel loved and valued and re-energized.

This last few weeks have been an unbelievable shitstorm. But yesterday was the best day I?ve had in a while. Thank you all for making it happen.

    Love,
    Greta

Small businesses lack cyber security measures, awareness

Multiple recent reports indicate that small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) may be suffering from a case of overconfidence regarding their data protection capabilities.

Although more than three-quarters of respondents to a JZ Analytics, Symantec and National Cyber Security Alliance survey believe their companies are safe from cyber attacks, only 17 percent actually have formal protocol measures in place. In addition, nearly 60 percent of SMBs do not have formal policies to respond to data breaches.

"It's terrifying that the majority of U.S. small businesses believe their information is protected, yet so many do not have the required policies or protection in place to remain safe," said Brian Burch, Symantec's vice president of Americas marketing for SMB. "For the small, poorly protected companies that suffer an attack, it's often fatal to their business."

Another recent survey by Shred-it yielded similar results about Canadian small businesses. Although more than three-quarters of respondents are aware of data protection regulations, more than 40 percent lack formal policies. Another 31 percent admitted that employees hadn't been educated about the issue.

    Security tips
Fortunately for SMBs, an abundance of strategies can be put in place to make their networks safer:

    - Employee education is key: Lack of awareness could be the biggest issue right now. The Shred-it survey found that more than 60 percent of respondents did not believe security breaches posed a threat to their companies' finances or reputation.

No. 7 Notre Dame stops No. 17 Stanford 20-13 in OT

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) ? Notre Dame knew what was coming. Stanford doesn't get cute inches from the goal line.

And after three years of getting pushed around by the Cardinal, the Fighting Irish pushed back, winning the most important shoving match they've had all season.

    Or did they?

A wall of Notre Dame defenders stopped Stepfan Taylor inches from the goal line on fourth down in overtime and the seventh-ranked Irish remained unbeaten with a 20-13 victory against the No. 17 Cardinal on a soggy Saturday in South Bend.

Taylor kept reaching and turning with bodies underneath him, and his knee never did hit the ground before reaching the ball across the goal line. But the officials ruled it was too late. The whistle had blown, and that meant the play was stopped.

Taylor finished with 102 yards on 28 carries. He needed 103.

The celebration had to wait for a replay review. The call stood. Irish fans who weren't already on the field spilled out of the stands, and Notre Dame's national title hopes remained alive. The Irish are 6-0 for the first time since 2002.

"Physically, we controlled the line of scrimmage," Irish coach Brian Kelly said of the last play. "Classic. Classic goal line stand."

Stanford coach David Shaw wasn't so sure.

"I didn't get a view of the last play," Shaw said. "Stepfan swore to me that he got it. That he got over the goal line on the second effort. The officials looked at it and said he didn't get in, so he didn't get in."

TJ Jones made a reaching 7-yard touchdown catch from Tommy Rees on the first overtime possession to give the Fighting Irish (6-0) a seven-point lead.

Stanford (4-2) responded by driving to a first-and-goal at the 4.

Behind its big strong offensive line, Taylor ran for 1 on first, 2 on second and inches on third down. That left one play from inside the 1 and the Notre Dame defense, led by Carlos Calabrese, held up Taylor and moved him backward.

"Very good opponent in Stanford, but today Notre Dame was better," Kelly said.

It had been a few years since that was the case. Stanford had won three straight in the series, physically dominating the Irish, with Andrew Luck at the helm.

With Luck gone to the NFL, the Irish stood up to the bullies.

Rees relieved Everett Golson after the sophomore took a helmet to the head during Notre Dame's game-tying field goal drive late in the fourth.

In the overtime, Rees lofted a 16-yard pass to Theo Riddick to convert a third-and-8 to the 7. On the next play, he threw behind Jones on a slant and the receiver reached back for a sliding two-handed catch and a 20-13 lead.

Then the Fighting Irish defense, which has now not given up a touchdown in four straight games, made it stand. Almost half the field was covered with Notre Dame fans, as rain poured down during the postgame celebration. They didn't seem to mind.

Toss another victory into Notre Dame lore.

Jordan Williamson's 27-yard field goal with 6:12 put the Cardinal up 13-10, and the Fighting Irish drove into Cardinal territory when Golson absorbed the helmet hit from Usua Amanam that was flagged for 15 yards.

Golson came out looking shaken and Rees came in. He completed an 11-yard pass to Tyler Eifert, and then on third-and-4 from the 28 Eifert drew a pass interference call on Terrence Brown that gave the Irish a first down at the 13.

The Irish couldn't punch it in and Kyle Brindza kicked a 22-yard field goal with 20 seconds left to tie it at 13.

Two of the nation's best defenses figured to dictate the game on a gray, rainy day and they didn't disappoint.

Notre Dame defensive tackle Stephon Tuitt was in the Stanford backfield all day and Manti Te'o was all over Stanford ball carriers.

On the other side, Shayne Skov and Ben Gardner gave Golson and the Irish very little room to operate.

Golson alternated between scary and spectacular all day, completing 12 of 24 for 141 yards and a touchdown. He also lost two key fumbles ? one that gave Stanford's Chase Thomas recovered in the end zone in the second quarter for a touchdown and the other that gave the Cardinal the ball back after Golson had made a long run deep into Stanford territory.

Josh Nunes had a similar day for Stanford, going 12 for 25 for 125 yards with two interceptions.

The Irish got their offense going in the third quarter, outgaining Stanford 114-19, but couldn't get any points, in part because Golson fumbled inside the Cardinal 20.

Notre Dame finally found the end zone on the first play of the fourth quarter. On a third-and-18 from the 24, Golson lifted a pass to the front corner of the end zone that the 6-foot-6 Eifert came down with for a touchdown and a 10-10 tie.

Nunes, Taylor and the Cardinal responded with their best drive of the game, a methodical 16-play, 65-yard march that took 8:03 off the clock and reached the Notre Dame 3. The Irish got a stop on third down Williamson's 27-yard field goal made it 13-10 with 6:12 left.

The third season under a coach has traditionally been a memorable one at Notre Dame. Frank Leahy, Ara Parseghian, Dan Devine and Lou Holtz all won national titles in Year 3 of coaching the Irish.

Brian Kelly's third season in South Bend was already starting to feel as if it could be special, too. Against Stanford, the Irish raised the stakes even higher.

"Six weeks left with this group, they leave here knowing they can win with the plan," Kelly said.

IS-1hblye05ftahp.jpgMolly Sims has just bought a new place in the Hamptons. The Wainscott five-bedroom, which has a large kitchen, staff lounge, and 1,200-bottle cellar, has far less terrible HDR photography than the Los Angeles home she sold for $2.78M last May and far more shingles than the homes of her fellow supermodels.
