A private, family-only funeral for?"Top Gun" director Tony Scott took place Friday in Los Angeles, five days after he jumped off the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro.

Friends and family members, including older brother, Ridley, who directed this summer's "Prometheus" and co-ran production company Scott Free, attended the service, TMZ reports. Ridley flew in from London the day after news of Tony's death.

The 68-year-old director, who helmed films like?"Top Gun," "Days of Thunder"?and "True Romance," died Aug. 19 in what was described as "a witnessed suicide."

Los Angeles County coroner spokesman Ed Winters tells The Hollywood Reporter that Scott left two separate notes for his family and friends. One note, discovered inside the director's black Toyota Prius, contained a list of people to contact, and a separate note found in Scott's office contained specific messages to friends and family.

"There was a suicide note to loves ones and a list with several names and numbers," Winter says, adding that neither of the notes contained mentions of health issues.

The reason for Scott taking his own life remains unknown.

In an April interview for THR's cover profile on Ridley, Tony spoke of their tight bond. "We are very close; he is my best friend," Tony said. "It's been a brother-mentor relationship. But?Rid and I are as tight as it can get. We are very tight and have had a brilliant relationship."

The Los Angeles Times reported that the Friday funeral was taking place at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. A second gathering paying tribute to the late director will be announced after Labor Day.

Scott leaves behind twin pre-teen boys and wife Donna Wilson Scott.

City of Rome offering video services concerning Social Security

Officials fought earlier this year to keep the Social Security office open in the City of Rome.

The office has closed, but the city is still offering services in a different way.

As many agencies are cutting back due to budget constraints the Social Security Administration is offering a unique video service for the City of Rome. If residents want to speak to a representative from the office they can do so through a web cam.

"This type of reduction in services or change in the way we provide services. We, meaning government agencies. It's the way of the world and we have to learn how to adapt," says Mayor Joseph Fusco.

Earlier this year, area officials fought to keep the Social Security office open in the City of Rome.

The Social Security Administration monitored visits, but not enough residents came out to keep the office open.

But, to keep providing services officials have installed video equipment for residents to speak to a representative from the Utica office.

Mayor Fusco says Rome is one of the very few places to have such a service.

"Eventually as time goes on and more people understand that they can do much more at home or online. We should see a diminish in traffic. And that is what's happened," says Mayor Fusco.

But, if a resident wants to speak to a representative in person, they could go to the Social Security office in Utica or use the video services in Rome.

To speak to a representative, people have to make an appointment at City Hall or by calling the Social Security's toll free hotline at 1-877-405-6750.

The office will be open every Wednesday and Thursday from 9 in the morning to 1 in the afternoon.

A Handy List Of Home Improvement Ideas | Marijuana for MRSA

Keep your home and family safe by properly installing a smoke detector in your home. Smoke detectors detect unsafe and hazardous smoke before you do. Stay on the safe side and purchase a new smoke detector. Make sure to check the batteries every month to ensure that it is working correctly when tragedy strikes.

Improving the air quality inside your home can be an invaluable home improvement for both your health and the resale value of your house. The first step would be to replace any old carpets or have them professionally cleaned, as they could be hiding contaminants, allergens and unpleasant odors. Secondly, if your budget allows, install an energy efficient air conditioning system.

Lastly, you should check the ball cock of the tank. If the ball cock washer is worn or damaged, simply remove and replace it. An easy indicator of ball cock trouble is a float ball that is positioned correctly with a higher than normal water level.

When searching for a home improvement contractor you should always check references. You have to research, and make sure the contractor has a great reputation and a proven work history with customers they have worked for in the past. You do not want to end up with a contractor who will do a bad job for you.

Put a ring on your power tool plugs! To keep small children from plugging these potentially dangerous tools into a power outlet, just slip a key ring through the holes on the tips of the plug prongs. For bigger plugs you can even use s small padlock to safeguard the tools against potentially hazardous use.

Throwing out an old sofa can be very tempting when it no longer looks new and clean. However, with the same effort it takes you to throw it out, you can buy some nice slipcovers and throw it on your sofa. Slipcovers are available in a myriad of designs and can spice up an old sofa very easily.

For a paint finish that really lasts, always sand, strip and prime, prior to applying a fresh coat. Many people think that skipping the preparatory steps of painting will speed up the process, but down the road old paint will peel through the new finish, ruining your paint job and forcing you to strip off yet another layer of paint before repainting again.

Switch your thermostat to a programmable model for an easy update that will save you money on your energy bills. These thermostats can be set to automatically adjust the temperature based on the time of day, so your furnace or air conditioner will run less often when you are at work or school or while you are sleeping.

Instead of purchasing plastic boxes for under bed storage, buy some square baskets. Baskets are a great way to store items you may need throughout the day, while keeping your room uncluttered and neat. Plastic doesn?t look very nice, but using baskets can be a touch of professionalism in any environment.

If you find yourself falling in love with a particular pattern of wallpaper but find that it?s either out of your price range or not quite durable enough for high-traffic areas, consider buying a roll of it anyway for decorative purposes. You can easily have it matted and framed, or can keep it around the house for smaller, more craft-type projects.

If you feel your home is too small, consider a basement renovation. In many cases, a basement can be turned into a second living room or climate-controlled storage space. If your basement has exterior access, you could even renovate it into an apartment for rental income or a mother-in-law suite for family members and other visitors.

A great home improvement tip is to not let your ego get in the way when making renovations. Sometimes, a renovation you may have in mind does not need to be done because it could violate a particular building code, or it could even harm the value of your home.

If your room feels plain, add interest to it by choosing a heavily patterned rug. Stripes (horizontal or vertical), polka dots and swirls always make for a bold statement in your room. Don?t be afraid to try new things, even if at first glance they don?t match. Try small swatches of a design before you purchase the full product to make sure you like it.

Well, hopefully the aforementioned collection of tips were enough to give you a great start on what to do and expect when it comes to improving your own home. This collection was carefully constructed to be an aid in your arsenal so that you can begin to hone your home improvement skills into doing great and safe improvement jobs.

Bolt brand has unique appeal for sponsors

LONDON (Reuters) - Jamaican Usain Bolt leaves his rivals trailing on the track and will outsell them off it by combining his unparalleled athletic achievement with personal appeal.

Bolt looks certain to improve on annual earnings of $20 million after retaining his 100 meters Olympic title and the world record on Sunday night. He needs a higher profile in the United States to join the ranks of the very richest athletes but that should not be beyond the fastest man in the world.

The gangly 25-year-old, tall for his sport at 1.96 meters (6ft 5in), is an advertising man's dream. His name is made for his profession and he has won fans on the biggest global stage with a unique cocktail of cheek and cool.

"The fastest man of all time is a big statement to be able to make," said Joel Seymour-Hyde of sports marketing agency Octagon. "Beyond that, you have his stature. He is an iconic-looking figure.

"Then you have the charisma and personality. 100 meter runners are always big on bravado but it's unique to have someone so smiley and relaxed," he said.

Famous for his much-mimicked "Lightning Bolt" pose at the end of races, Bolt has a series of lucrative sponsorship deals.

He is the face of German sportswear company Puma, which also sponsors the Jamaican national team. He also looms large on a poster for Olympic sponsor Visa adorning the Westfield shopping centre on the edge of the Olympic Park.

Bolt's success was a fillip for Puma, number three in sportswear sales behind Nike and Adidas, which said last month it would cut back on sponsorship deals after second quarter earnings slumped.

Puma is not an Olympic sponsor and can only start a fresh marketing campaign built around Bolt next week once the Games are over.

ATLANTIC CROSSING

Puma has tapped into Jamaica's image as a laid-back and vibrant country to help sell Bolt and his team mates, and signed up Cedella Marley, daughter of reggae music great Bob Marley, to design Jamaica's Olympic kit.

Bolt, in return, has helped refresh the image of the Caribbean island, said Peter Walshe of brand specialists Millward Brown.

Walshe said Bolt's calm in the face of immense stress widened his appeal.

"With Bolt, there is something that goes beyond sport. It's his attitude to life, how he conquers pressure with humor, that mixture of humility and arrogance," he said.

He compared Bolt's marketability with former England soccer captain David Beckham, one of the most well-known sports celebrities Britain has produced.

Beckham broke the back of the all-important U.S. market after joining LA Galaxy, and ranks 8th in Forbes' latest survey of top earning sports personalities. Bolt was the highest track and field athlete but only 63rd overall in a list topped by boxer Floyd Mayweather.

"He absolutely has the ability to crack the U.S. market," said Mike Principe, CEO of TLA Worldwide, a company which represents U.S. hurdler Lolo Jones as well as baseball players and golfers.

Track and field does not have the regular exposure enjoyed by the biggest U.S. sports and has to exploit the Olympic spotlight every four years, Principe said.

Puma was certain to step up marketing efforts after London.

"I would make use of his big personality, smile and humor," Principe said.

"Demographically, he is going to appeal quite heavily to the younger American male," he added. "I think you will also find a fair number of women interested in Usain as well."

Kno starts offering K-12 textbooks on tablets, scores industry-first deal with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

Kno starts offering K12 textbooks on tablets, scores industryfirst deal with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

Kno's tablet textbooks have only ever been available to the college crowd; the younger among us have typically had to get a comprehensive digital education from either the tablet maker's own solution, like Apple's iBooks 2, or less-than-integrated options. A new deal for K-12 books is giving the students, if not necessarily the teachers, a fresh alternative. Parents can now rent books for home studying at prices under $10 per title. They're not state-specific books, but their Common Core roots will keep learners on the same (virtual) page as classmates while adding Kno's usual 3D, links, notes and videos. Just to sweeten the pot further, Kno says its current catalog centers around a pact with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt -- a publisher that hasn't offered K-12 books on any tablet platform until now, according to Kno. The initial focus is on iPad, web and Windows 7 readers, although Android-loving parents looking for that at-home edge will have to wait until sometime "soon" to leap in.
