Build This Rolling Cart to Carry Garden Supplies

1.) Get Parts

The lumber needed to build the cart consists of three 8-foot 2 x 4s, one 12-foot 2 x 4, and 16 8-foot 1 x 2s. We recommend rot-resistant wood, such as cedar. You'll also need a 1-pound box of 2?-inch deck screws, two ? x 3?inch bolts with locknuts and six washers, and a box of 1?-inch deck screws. Use 14-inch-diameter plastic wheels?we got Lowe's model 0188327.

2.) Saw & Sand

Crosscut the lumber to size. Cut a tapered angle to form a handle and sand it smooth. Apply paint or sealer.

3.) Build a Box

Assemble the 2 x 4 frame, starting with the base. Drill 1?8-inch pilot holes and drive three 2?-inch deck screws to form each joint. Attach the rear legs, aligning them with the ends of the base. Fasten the handles flush with the tops of the legs.

4.) Attach the Wheels

Mark spots on the base side rails 12? inches from the front of the cart, centered on the 2 x 4s. Drill 5?8-inch holes at the marks. In each of the holes, insert a bolt sequentially through a washer, the wheel, another washer, and the lumber. Attach a washer and locknut to the bolt and tighten.

5.) Screw on Sides

Drill a 1?8-inch pilot hole in each end of the 1 x 2s centered on the 2 x 4 frame. Fasten the slats to the frame with 1?-inch deck screws. Take care not to overdrive the screws; the thin boards split easily. Attach the floor first, starting at the sides and working toward the middle. Use scrap 1 x 2s to maintain a ?-inch space between slats. Adjust the spacing on the final four boards to even out gaps. Repeat for the front and side rails?and load it up!
