home improvement | bathrooms that sparkle

I think I may have mentioned this before, but I am a bit of a magpie: I love everything that sparkles. And I cannot think a better room in the house for sparkly makeover than the bathroom. Sparkle in the bathroom makes me feel glamorous.

Sparkle and shine come from using surfaces that reflect light. Some of the best materials to include are glass, mirror, chrome, glass or porcelain tile and highly polished stone.

Main fixtures ? bathroom plumbing fixtures in bright white are inherently sparkly. This is the easiest part. Your shower and floors could be done in tile, glass tile or polished light stone such as marble. If you?re going to go to the expense of using tile or stone for the shower or bath during your bathroom remodeling, you will likely want to use a frameless glass shower enclosure to maximize the look.

Lighting ? in order for the reflective surfaces to really shine, you will need plenty of bright light, both natural and from lighting fixtures. Additionally, you can use chandeliers or other fixtures made of chrome and crystals for extra sparkle. In my own bathroom, I have used this directional fixture from Ulextra and I love the light that is casts.

Mirrors ? large mirrors, preferably with large beveled edges will reflect the light from your other reflective surfaces. Having mirrors on more than one wall will add more dimension to the room.

Countertops ? you have a number of options when it comes to countertops. Beautifully polished marble is one high-end option but you could also choose a quartz counter with flecks or glass or mirror in it. A more affordable option may be a tempered glass countertop in white or spa blue-green.

Accessories ? you don?t have to take on a complete home remodeling to add a little sparkle; it can be done on a small scale by changing up some of the accessories. For a budget-friendly update, you can use a mirrored tray on top of the vanity to hold your essentials, add a chrome trash can, tissue dispenser and towel warmer and change out the drawer pulls and hooks. Add a favorite piece of artwork in a mirrored frame and voila!

A touch of contrast ? an all white bathroom can be jarring, cold and clinical. Adding touches of color either in your tile, stone or accessories is important to complete the look. Additionally, using a dark vanity or flooring will add contrast to make your light surfaces seem even brighter. Just because a surface is dark, doesn?t mean it can?t shine. Using a vanity in a dark lacquer can add a little punch that your bathroom needs.

Keeping it clean ? a word of warning: shiny surfaces show the tiniest splash or smudge and require more frequent attention and cleaning than duller surfaces. In order for your sparkly bathroom to stay that way, you?ll need to stay on top of its cleaning.
